Image of HOPE | Expressions of HOPE | Centre for HOPE | Living the HOPE

Living The HOPE is the working title for the third documentary in the Kambani Diaries series. Shooting has already begun through campaign events, Canvas of HOPE footage and filming of brick pledgers. This will continue until the end of the campaign. The main scenes will be shot during the Expressions of HOPE art tour taking place in Nigeria in October 2009. It will also cover the construction of the Centre for HOPE from 2010 to 2012.

The documentary will track the hopes of disabled artists and disadvantaged children through their real life experiences against the odds of their physical disabilities and obvious disadvantages. The aim is to uproot the unending stream of artistic talent buried in the "harsh terrain" of Africa. For too long, the media has fed the world a diet of disease, despair, destruction, deceit and disaster as the staple food of Africa. Many do not realise that there is a positive side, a talented side, an amazingly creative side which Kambani is helping to unveil.
"HOPE is when the great plans you have for tomorrow knock on your door today"
A host of artists are set to support the tour through their endorsement of Kambani's mission. The tour starts in Osogbo where the famous Osogbo school emerged from the work of Uli Beier and Susan Wenger. Susan was scheduled to be interviewed for the documentary but sadly passed away in January 2009. The tour then moves on to Benin, the bronze-works artisan centre of Africa.

Benin is the focus of another Kambani documentary "The Crown Affair", which tells the story of one man's 11 year challenge of British Museum copyright in respect of the famous Queen Idia mask. The Oba of Benin will support the exhibition and documentary. Bronze-works from the centuries old Igun Street's artisans will feature strongly.

The Expressions of HOPE tour sets the scene for a strong statement against discrimination in the arts by showcasing and documenting the work of a number of disabled artists. The documentary will also highlight the incorporation of the Kambani Foundation for disablity in the arts and will chart the development of the Centre for HOPE from foundation to completion.

The documentary presents some creative opportunities.
London Knife Crime - A Fresh Idea
This is an initiative to encourage gang culture youth from the London Borough of Hackney to participate in the Campaign of HOPE by attending a two week outreach and discovery challenge in Lagos, Nigeria. The trip will be anchored on a structured timetable, the primary goal being one of assisting with the construction of the Centre for HOPE in Lagos. There will also be a variety of adventure trips, learning experiences and leisure pursuits including a trek on the famous Badagry Slave route, a visit to the King (Oba) of Abeokuta and a climb of the world famous Olumo Rock. Discussions are being held with Hackney Police and the Hackney Youth Offending Team towards this. The trip will be restricted to a maximum of 5 supervised youth at a time. If successful, further groups of youth could attend over the period it will take to complete the Centre.

The initiative sets the scene for a powerful sub-documentary, exploring the impact of the experience on the lives of participants. Participation in the documentary will be a tool to engage youth in a positive life changing journey that could help change lives and perceptions of London's knife crime culture.
Unity in Diversity - A Global View
This concept involves embarking on a world tour to film scenes and comments of brick pledgers from around the globe. The theme being conveyed is "Unity in Diversity". The range of scenery and backdrops as well as the diversity of culture of pledgers from over 100 countries will create a setting for a unique message; bringing the peoples and the cultures of the world together to create a centre of unity and HOPE in Africa.

If you are interested in participating in the documentary, please click on the Buy a Brick of HOPE banner above. You will need to pledge a brick towards the Centre for HOPE to be eligible. Once your pledge is processed, you will have an opportunity to enter a catchphrase exercise which will be used to select 100 participants for the documentary.
